October 16th is the first time I can say I had a good shot at 50 knots. The conditions were perfect for it. 30-40 knots of wind on a broad flat course. And the wind held up for at least 5-8 runs at full strength. It was surprisingly easy to get speed and control it. A definite first for me. Although 50 knots was not achieved this time, I am convinced that the right fin design will make the difference. I tried a new TM50 design but had some issue with my GPS early on and didn't realise I had done a 47.8 on it. My GPS was still set on 45 something so figured the fin wasn't working. Only later when I looked at the track points did I realise that it went so fast. Next Time I'll take more care to ensure I know what speeds I am doing. Having the GPS mounted on the boom will be a big help in this regard. And of course my lack of fitness hurt me again. With a list of tasks an arm long I am not getting the time to get out on the water. I need to change that if I am to take this seriously. Below are my results from the three Locosys GT11s. Apologies for the data overload! Note the number of satellites from one GPS was consistently one satellite less than from the other two GPS units. This GPS was on my arm while the other two were in my helmet. This validates Tom Chalko's reasoning about putting the GPS on or in the helmet for better reception. It almost cost Chris and myself a good result when the number of satellites dropped to 4.
And as if that wasn't enough data already, here is some more for reference, the combined doppler results from 3 GPS units complete with Claimed Speed.
Here are the graphs of the best runs. Note the total inaccuracy of the Garmin zigzag on some of the tracks where Garmin data was available. What is interesting is the consistency of the track point tracks relative to each other. The black lines follow a distinctive path as do the green doppler lines, but not the same as the track point lines..
