A fine example of Sandy Point at its best. Not particularly windy today for the speed sailing crew, especially in comparison to some nuclear days recently, but a true quality day with winds holding up consistently around 25-32 for much of the late afternoon. I didn't get a chance to put out my wind meter because time was precious, but estimate max gusts would have been to around 35 although ever-so briefly.

The consistent conditions showed up in my results. I managed to do 18 runs over 40 knots for the 500m during the period from 6:30pm till 9pm.

There is not much to say about my gear that has not already been said. I used the Naish Stealth 5.0, and initially thought I had gone too small. But in the tight conditions it proved to be a perfect choice for the 30-32 knot gusts and the peak speeds around 44 were about as good as could have been asked for given the wind strength.

The Missile proved it has more in the tank to go though. After getting to 45.3 the other day on the easterly, and pushing 44 in these conditions I am much more confident that it can do 45 consistently if the wind gets solid 30-35 and the course is broader. I just need to move the front strap inboard I think to make the starboard tack run a bit more controllable.

One interesting aspect of today was that I suffered a lack of satellites, which for the first time has affected my overall result. On my fourth fastest 10 second run the number of sats got down to 4 which is not enough for a proper fix. This was probably due to my body blocking one of the few satellites being tracked at the time as I curved around the course. I have noticed that many of the runs got down to 4 and 5 satellites at this same location throughout the afternoon. RealSpeed was set to a minimum of 5 sats so the points during these periods of reduced sats were automatically marked invalid. My results posted on gpsss correctly included this small adjustment down in my speeds. (note that for the 18 by 500m runs above I turned this checking off to show the consistency of the runs).

Here are the results using RealSpeed from the NAVI and the Foretrex

And here are the graphs of the best runs:
