A good light wind day to again test the light wind equipment including the Stealth 6.0, the F2 Missile and the 23 cm TimeMachine TM45 V6. I had very good results during Al's Speed fortnight on one light wind day and was keen to see if it was wind strength or pure efficiency that has produce the speeds.

Well today proved the gear was working very well in light winds. The speeds really sparkled in wind that was mostly around 18-22 knots, occasionally nudging 25 knots, and I was able to get a couple of  very good runs over 42 on the GPS before my boom started to come undone. Even in the lulls I still managed around 40 on the GPS on a number of runs. Here are my best runs taken off the Navi GPS.

I think there is still plenty of room for improvement in these conditions and I would like to spend a bit of time working on something that will handle the light winds even better. I suspect a bigger fin would improve things a bit but the flex of a bigger fin from the V6 mould could be problem. In fact Hennie Bredenkamp had more success with a 22cm TM45 V6 than a 24cm version of the same fin. The 24cm had more rake so that may have contributed to the flex in the tight conditions.

Trackpoints are here: mal wright 20061202 navi.gpx.

I also watched the Macquarie Innovation do a couple of runs around 43-45 knots. Apparently the MI was a bit underpowered today. Here is a picture of the MI which also shows the conditions of the day (sorry about the quality, taken with my phone camera). Don't you wish you lived near Sandy Point? You can see the pilots Tim Daddo (left) and Simon McKeon in the foreground.
