Welcome to the Time Machine page where you can find out more about the Time Machine Speed Fins and Foils. BackgroundThe origins of the Time Machine Foils started in the late eighties when I developed fins for speed sailing competitions at Fuertaventura and the Canal in St Marie de la Mer. At this time I explored asymmetric fins and CNC machining and had some notable (and controversial) successes at the time. The most notable was first place at the first speed sailing competition on the French Canal. By 1989 I was technically ready to tackle a world record and even managed to set speeds in excess of the world record at the time (41.78 knots over 250m) but a lack of funds and the extraordinary cost of setting up an attempt prohibited me from pursuing the sport any further. After a long hiatus and with the advent of the personal GPS I rediscovered speed sailing in 2005 and restarted my pursuit to develop the ultimate speed fins. The Time Machine TM45 is the result of a 2 year research and development period, the details or which are well documented on this website. Many designs and forms have been explored as part of this ongoing development and much about foil design has been learnt. I developed custom software called Finmaker for generating my own unique fins and foils with the designs first tested in XFoil, then machined to high tolerances on a custom CNC machine, and finally tested at Sandy Point in Australia, one of the most "pure" speed sailing locations in the world. The quality of the conditions at Sandy Point have made it relatively easy to discern a good design from a bad one, which is why the TM45 was developed to such a high standard so quickly. From this successful beginning I have been working on providing more options for my racing customers, and over time will offer a range of products to meet the needs of the top competitors to the guys that may have less demanding needs but want to experience the best gear available. The links on the left will take you to a growing range of models where you can determine if they suit your needs and arrange orders and payment. Mal Wright |
